The Museum of Old and New Art stands as one of the cultural centerpieces of the greater Hobart region. Since 2011, MONA has been host to countless exhibitions featuring visual, musical and experience-based artistic influences.
The MONA Helicopter Tour departs from Cambridge Aerodrome and heads northward up the Derwent River. Overlooking the city, the helicopter will take you past the Meehan Range where Hobart City forefronts the majestic Mount Wellington in the background.
Once you reach Berriedale, you will land at the Museum and will be granted entry for the remainder of the day. You are free to stay and peruse through the incredible gallery, featuring ancient Egyptian sarcophagus’ to ultra contemporary art pieces. There is an eclectic collection of varying artistic stimulus and enough material to keep anyone entertained for hours.
At some point during the day, we recommend you grab a drink at the Moo Brew Cellar Door, next to the museum. They brew their own beer in-house and are known for their interesting and unconventional beer-creation methods – seemingly taking inspiration from the pleasant cacophony of what happens next door.
When you feel like heading back, you are welcome to jump on the ferry which will take you back down the Derwent River into Hobart City. The ferry ticket is included in the price so you will be provided with a voucher upon landing at MONA. This in itself is a very interesting and enjoyable trip as you see the surrounding building and sights up through Hobart and the northern suburbs.
The MONA Helicopter experience is great for couples and families. Arrive at the museum in style and spend the day enjoying all of the weird and whacky exhibitions on offer. If you’re luck they’ll even have a musical performance running during the day!
